The larger of the two instruments they made, called a Rajao, is roughly tenor ukulele size, but had five strings tuned dgcea. My four string version is based off of instruments I studied at the Bishop Museum and with Shawn at <a href="https://ukulelefriend.com/">ukulelefriend.com</a>. I use many of the same tools, techniques and materials that they used in the 1890&#8217;s to produce these instruments, with a few modern updates. The back, sides, fretboard and headplate are Koa from the <a href="https://imagesofoldhawaii.com/kahuku-ranch/">Kahuku Ranch</a> section of island of Hawaii, provided to me by sawyer/forester Bart Potter. It features some great curl, color and black flecks that give it a unique character. The neck is some Cypress, salvaged from a boat shop and the top is Western Red Cedar, from <a href="https://woodfromthewest.com/">woodfromthewest.com</a>. I wrapped it up in some shop made rope binding from Maple, Walnut and Myrtle. This customer asked for a a handmade wooden case, similar to the old instruments, which I made from Cedar scraps from a cabinet shop. This ukulele has a 17&#8221; scale, with fluorocarbon strings, geared tuners, bone nut and saddle and wooden strap buttons. Thanks for the order and your long term support, Tom!!!</p><div class="image-gallery-embed" data-attrs="{&quot;gallery&quot;:{&quot;images&quot;:[{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/1eebe5e4-f4bb-43e3-85fe-b349480f2477_2142x2856.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/a3ece8b5-6809-4794-820c-61626eb8c208_2142x2856.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/37882654-9392-481f-b497-1f734d51cdc0_2142x2856.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/be188520-8c7d-4022-b904-21d87deda4f1_1512x2016.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/c4033fa9-820e-4bd3-b27a-6a296e50771f_2142x2856.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/75e7016d-e746-40f3-a078-d82349a1f56a_2142x2856.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/d2879148-61fc-4e71-bbe3-fae3d2a5b971_2142x2856.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/55029938-cbe5-408f-9908-10f3db05f48d_2142x2856.jpeg&quot;}],&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;alt&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;staticGalleryImage&quot;:{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/png&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/eb817abe-469d-4b88-9a57-b7540be58a68_1456x1700.png&quot;}},&quot;isEditorNode&quot;:true}"></div><div id="youtube2-XP4dOUe1GKQ" class="youtube-wrap" data-attrs="{&quot;videoId&quot;:&quot;XP4dOUe1GKQ&quot;,&quot;startTime&quot;:null,&quot;endTime&quot;:null}" data-component-name="Youtube2ToDOM"><div class="youtube-inner"><iframe src="https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/XP4dOUe1GKQ?rel=0&amp;autoplay=0&amp;showinfo=0&amp;enablejsapi=0" frameborder="0" loading="lazy" gesture="media" allow="autoplay; fullscreen" allowautoplay="true" allowfullscreen="true" width="728" height="409"></iframe></div></div><div class="subscription-widget-wrap-editor" data-attrs="{&quot;url&quot;:&quot;https://aaronkeim768722.substack.com/subscribe?&quot;,&quot;text&quot;:&quot;Subscribe&quot;,&quot;language&quot;:&quot;en&quot;}" data-component-name="SubscribeWidgetToDOM"><div class="subscription-widget show-subscribe"><div class="preamble"><p class="cta-caption">This Substack is reader-supported. Madeiran instruments from that time are often in handmade wooden cases/boxes and the early builders sometimes did the same thing. I have seen a handful of these, mainly at Shawn&#8217;s collection. <a href="http://ukulelefriend.com">ukulelefriend.com</a> </p><p>Here is a Madeiran instrument in the case. It is a simple wooden box, with corners made with a rabbet joint and nailed together. The lining is some simple velvet or thin felt. Notice that the instrument is basically pitched in place at the nut, with the lid of the case pushing against the nut to trap it in place. The extra mass, larger head, longer string length and different bridge placement produce a different sound and feeling. It is deeper, richer and louder, but looses some of the sparkling, chiming, charm of the smaller banjo ukes. All the wood for this instrument comes from the Carpenter Ant stash in Portland, courtesy of our friend Lizann. The Cherry has a nice, dark color and some big curls in it, as well as some dark streaks, which I really like. The board was likely a reject from a cabinet making project, as it would have been too unique looking for a 1990&#8217;s kitchen. The fretboard and headplate is Dogwood, which was milled from a tree at Lizann&#8217;s house. It is dense and hard, perfect for fretboards, with a subtle, red color that will darken with time. Thanks for the repeat order, Peter! </p><div class="image-gallery-embed" data-attrs="{&quot;gallery&quot;:{&quot;images&quot;:[{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/6f2a04c1-480f-4757-b95d-0beab4448e9f_2142x2856.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/27012ee9-f19b-471f-b8f9-7dd25da18c31_2142x2856.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/3837865d-713a-4c50-96ac-bea445841c4a_2142x2856.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/9f9a4b31-2392-4701-877c-491edc785196_2142x2856.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/a0ccb104-6dd6-4505-90e6-31e9f70c8455_2142x2856.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/c927362a-bfdb-421d-aa40-b442256b6975_2142x2856.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/ac4705b4-4d70-4fd5-a189-b8d5a9d19c40_1512x2016.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/2e480b84-253b-41f3-bc60-3a36b875c480_1512x2016.jpeg&quot;}],&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;alt&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;staticGalleryImage&quot;:{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/png&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/b64b8c52-bb87-40ff-a06c-3df38c91ed23_1456x1700.png&quot;}},&quot;isEditorNode&quot;:true}"></div><div id="youtube2-oF7AZMLz1K0" class="youtube-wrap" data-attrs="{&quot;videoId&quot;:&quot;oF7AZMLz1K0&quot;,&quot;startTime&quot;:null,&quot;endTime&quot;:null}" data-component-name="Youtube2ToDOM"><div class="youtube-inner"><iframe src="https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/oF7AZMLz1K0?rel=0&amp;autoplay=0&amp;showinfo=0&amp;enablejsapi=0" frameborder="0" loading="lazy" gesture="media" allow="autoplay; fullscreen" allowautoplay="true" allowfullscreen="true" width="728" height="409"></iframe></div></div><div class="subscription-widget-wrap-editor" data-attrs="{&quot;url&quot;:&quot;https://aaronkeim768722.substack.com/subscribe?&quot;,&quot;text&quot;:&quot;Subscribe&quot;,&quot;language&quot;:&quot;en&quot;}" data-component-name="SubscribeWidgetToDOM"><div class="subscription-widget show-subscribe"><div class="preamble"><p class="cta-caption">This Substack is reader-supported. Kevin from woodfromthewest.com found an Alder tree for me and milled it into neck blanks. He sent them to us on a pallet and we have to store it while it dries out. Last weekend, Henry wanted to make some pocket money, so I convinced him to help me load it up into the loft to dry. Kevin sent it to us stacked on these sticks, which are milled with grooves in them. These are called stickers, which I would normally just mill from scrap wood. But, the grooves promote airflow and reduce any staining or fungus/mold that might happen with regular scrap-wood stickers. </p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link I have gotten into the habit of bringing a mobile luthier setup to these events. I intend on just doing work like strap buttons and string changes, but other stuff always comes up. Many people save their instruments to bring to me to look at, whether for regular maintenance or estimates of future work. I put out Venmo and paypal QR codes, but also take cash and barter. Folks usually pay more than I ask because they appreciate the service. I also like checking in with instruments that I built in the past. It gives me important info on past decisions and designs. </p><p>Here is a list of everything I got done last week:</p><p>Endpin installation: 1</p><p>Strap button installation: 6</p><p>String set installation: 5</p><p>Single string change: 3</p><p>Pickup installation: 1</p><p>File nut slots: 2</p><p>Add side dots: 2</p><p>Dress fret ends: 1</p><p>Instrument checkups: 7</p><p>Tighten banjo head: 2</p><p>Tuning machine replacement: 1</p><p>Here are two instruments that I enjoyed working on: </p><p></p>

We left for Ukulele camp and crossed our fingers. While we were gone, our neighbor texted to say they were delivered and they were waiting outside the shop when we arrived home today. </p><p>The pallet was wrapped with a piece of carpet, two beefy tie downs and some plastic. I think it rained while we were gone, but it didn&#8217;t really matter as these were green from the tree already. Henry and I unwrapped it all and snapped these photos. The ends have been painted with glue to help stop cracking. This is because wood dries out faster from the end than the sides. It helps to imagine a piece of wood like a bundle of straws and the glue seals them up so the moisture can escape evenly. </p><div class="subscription-widget-wrap-editor" data-attrs="{&quot;url&quot;:&quot;https://aaronkeim768722.substack.com/subscribe?&quot;,&quot;text&quot;:&quot;Subscribe&quot;,&quot;language&quot;:&quot;en&quot;}" data-component-name="SubscribeWidgetToDOM"><div class="subscription-widget show-subscribe"><div class="preamble"><p class="cta-caption">This Substack is reader-supported. This week I fit a couple of banjo necks to the bodies. Even though these are carefully cut with a router, I want them to mate perfectly, with no gaps. The first task is to carefully cut the end grain, just the smallest slice, with a chisel. For this, I firmly grab the neck with one hand and chisel the end grain with the other. It usually takes a couple of tries to get it close. Next, I test fit the neck and rim together. If it needs a little more work, I insert a strip of sand paper between the neck and rim, push it hard together and pull the sandpaper out. We call this &#8220;flossing&#8221; the neck joint. This task seems small, but pinching the sandpaper hard enough with one hand and squeezing the joint together with the other, then flossing the paper out under pressure is a challenge. </p><p>I probably did this task for 45 minutes, twice this week, and my hands were really painful each night. </p><p>Last night, I dreamed about a YouTube video I saw of a Japanese craftsman fitting the skin on a Shamisen body. He held the skin with these little wooden clamps, held tightly with a wedge. In my dream, I took one of these clamps and pinched the sand paper in it, so I could pull on the clamp itself, instead of trying to deathgrip the sandpaper with my thumb and finger. Here is the video, well worth the watch. Since it&#8217;s a short, substack won&#8217;t let me embed it, but this link should click through. </p><p>https://youtube.com/shorts/Jfv43r1U4aI?si=I-lQ4xiPYLJqI5rC</p><p>First, I went to my box of orphan handles and chose a short one, with a smooth, round shape. </p><p></p><div class="image-gallery-embed" data-attrs="{&quot;gallery&quot;:{&quot;images&quot;:[{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/bfc0d572-e417-41a0-9d31-fd1071320b5b_2856x2142.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/acb1347c-61eb-47c9-9848-87f06d53f7c9_2016x1512.jpeg&quot;}],&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;alt&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;staticGalleryImage&quot;:{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/png&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/10aff424-7671-45ef-9e46-f818af6523f0_1456x720.png&quot;}},&quot;isEditorNode&quot;:true}"></div><p></p>

In particular, she was asking for the final chapter story about the Mya-Moe for the Langley student I was working on. It turns out that I finished it, got paid and shipped it back without updating here. Sorry about that. </p><p>Hopefully I can keep better track of such things in the future. </p><p>In the Mya-Moe days, Gordon bought 3&#8221;x3&#8221;x36&#8221; Mahogany neck blanks, milled, sorted, dried and ready to use. He paid a big premium for this, but it saved us a lot of labor. For the last 8 years of Beansprout, I have been piecing together necks from whatever boards I happened to mill or salvage that are suitable, usually with a hardwood stripe or two running down them. This has been a part of the visual identity of the brand, with the contrasting stripe going down the back of the neck. But, every neck is a one-off, with different dimensions and properties, which caused a lot more labor and variability in the final product. It has suited my willingness to spend labor instead of money, but this may need updating as my body gets older.</p><p>In the last year, I have been able to use some 3&#8221;x3&#8221; neck blanks of Fir, Alder and Mahogany that were a joy to use. I didn&#8217;t have to glue them up, mill them so the stripe is plumb nor make sure the stripe stays down the center as the instrument moves along. Kevin from woodfromthewest.com heard me comment about how much I liked the Alder neck on #1000 (pictured above) and went out of his way to find a log for me. Alder is outside of the scope of many of the Western timber outfits, because it is not as profitable as other premium hardwoods and is generally just a &#8220;trash&#8221; tree around the Fir, Pine, Spruce mix they are looking for. Kevin says it is generally turned into pulp or sawdust and SHIPPED ALL THE WAY TO CHINA!!!!! That&#8217;s right, we use our fossil fuels for that too. </p><p></p>

At the smaller size, every tiny difference matters even more, and it&#8217;s easy to under or over build them. It&#8217;s a hard line to walk.<br><br>The top for this is some sinker Redwood from woodfromthewest.com, a scrap from a guitar build. The curly Koa back and sides came from a retiring luthier. On the west coast, we also have various other &#8220;Cedars&#8221; that are also good, including Port Orford Cedar, Monterrey Cypress and Alaskan Yellow Cedar. All three of the related yellow woods sound about the same: bright, vibrant and detailed. I like this top because of the blue streaks that are in it. It&#8217;s from a stump my friend Ben dropped off, milled from a tree on the Washington side of the Columbia river. The Walnut is some rich, colorful stuff that I milled from a Hood River tree. I spent a little time working out the tailpiece and end bolt, but it has spent the rest of the year hanging on the wall. My friend Preston, who I play Magic&#8221; The Gathering&#8221; with, said, &#8220;I like coming in the shop, because there is always something new to look at.&#8221; I responded, &#8220;If there was nothing new to look at, I would be out of business!&#8221; Despite that statement, this banjo friend has not gotten any love in months. </p><p>I decided to string it up yesterday for two reasons: First, two banjo friends have been in the shop recently and seem interested in it. Second, our future orders seem to be swinging towards more banjos than ukes for the first time ever, so it seems having another banjo model might be a good idea. </p><div class="subscription-widget-wrap-editor" data-attrs="{&quot;url&quot;:&quot;https://aaronkeim768722.substack.com/subscribe?&quot;,&quot;text&quot;:&quot;Subscribe&quot;,&quot;language&quot;:&quot;en&quot;}" data-component-name="SubscribeWidgetToDOM"><div class="subscription-widget show-subscribe"><div class="preamble"><p class="cta-caption">This Substack is reader-supported. body, a Pistachio fretboard, head plate, and bridge, and a Mahogany neck. As you can also see, it has Pistachio binding that changes colors around the body. Super unique! It includes a K&amp;K pickup and comes with a hard-shell case.</p><p>Aaron doesn&#8217;t use a lot of tropical woods in his builds, but when he does they are always salvaged woods that he stumbles upon. This Koa came to him when a local luthier moved away and literally left the boards on our porch! I think I bought some boards from The Dee Mill about 5 years ago and I only now am about to use it up. I have a large stash of non-curly Walnut that I got from Cath on Vashon Island and that has served me well in the last few years, but it pays to have the curly wood on hand&#8230;</p>
